Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental illnesses and are able to prescribe medication. Psychologists focus on “talk therapies” designed to help people through behavioural / cognitive / emotional etc. issues. In some cases, people will generally see both a psychiatrist and psychologist at the same time. Psychiatrists are also able to refer you to a psychologist. Both psychologists and psychiatrists require registration with their respective health board (Psychology board for us) in order to be able to practice and use the titles
Sessions run for the standard 50 mins each. Intake sessions may be slightly extended by 5-10 minutes for you to fill out the relevant forms and ask me any questions you might have before we begin.
Psychologists are bound by strict confidentiality rules and what happens in your sessions stays between us with 2 notable exceptions; we are required to disclose the information by law (e.g. subpoena) or if there is potential harm to yourself or others. This will always be discussed with you beforehand.
This largely depends on you and there is no fixed answer at all. As a rough estimate, the sessions allowed by medicare each year ( 10 in total ) are generally sufficient for most circumstances. This will usually be discussed with you in your first session.
Yes! Self-referrals are always welcome. If you with to use private health or pay the full fees there is no need to get a referral. A specialist/GP referral only applies if you wish to use medicare rebates which subsidise $84.80 a session for up to 10 sessions a year.
