PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELLING & THERAPY WITH OUR PERTH PSYCHOLOGISTS
The foundation of effective counselling & psychotherapy is a safe, collaborative and trusting relationship. We will work closely with you to create a plan that is tailored to your goals and needs. Our approach to therapy is active and supportive.
We work with adult individuals to address a wide range of difficulties. We always have at least one psychologist available for after-hours and weekend bookings at no extra charge. We can also visit you at your home or hospital for a small out-call fee. Do note we do not see couples or children at this time but are always happy to refer you to a recommended psychologist in Perth.
OUR APPROACH TO THERAPY
Our psychologists believe in adopting an analytical and scientific approach to our sessions while also maintaining a friendly and supportive therapeutic relationship, one that focuses on collaboration and working together towards a common goal. Our approach to psychological counselling and therapy is based on both short and long term positive outcomes and to this end, we place an emphasis on psycho-education and skills training to ensure that you have the tools you need to thrive in the long run while also addressing immediate presenting concerns / symptoms.
What will we talk about in Therapy?
Many people see a psychologist without knowing what to expect or where or how to begin. This is perfectly fine. Some of the things that might be discussed in these sessions include identifying and clarifying your goals for yourself and your identity, examining your current situation and obstacles which might be preventing you from achieving your full potential, and analysing your strengths / weaknesses / achievements as well as any aspect of your life that you might want to change. Remember, counselling is not only about “fixing” a bad situation, it is also about making an average or good situation better.
What to expect in your first session
In your first session, you will spend about 3-5 minutes reading and filling out our consent/intake forms as well as a privacy information sheet that you can take home for your own reference. During this time, you are encouraged to ask as many questions as you need about your your psychologist. In the first couple of sessions, you will generally be doing most of the talking and the psychologist will usually be taking a lot more notes (while still giving you their full attention).
Where applicable, we will usually come up with a treatment plan at the end of either the first or second session after information has been collected and analysed. You might also be asked to complete a short psychological test (e.g. DASS-21, JSS, BDI-II) at the end of each session to give us both an idea of your progress. This can be done in a few minutes and is typically completed electronically on our iPad.
We are proponents of feedback informed treatment and when applicable, use feedback rating scales / surveys regularly throughout the course of our sessions together.
What if my psychologist's approach does not work for me
During the first few sessions, You are encouraged to pay attention to how you feel during and after each session to decide if the psychologist’s approach is a good match for you. If you feel that it’s not really going well, please do not hesitate to let us know and we can assist you in getting a referral to someone who might be a better fit.
We understand that everyone is unique and different approaches work better on different people depending on a multitude of factors that might not be apparent even to ourselves. Ultimately, your well-being is our top priority.
