Normal vs Abnormal Feelings of Anger

Anger is a natural emotion, and most people sometimes get mad at themselves, co-workers, family and friends or even the world in general. However, if you find yourself frequently feeling intense anger or irritability and are having trouble trying to control your temper more often than usual, you might benefit from anger management counselling. This is especially true when you start to find yourself surprised by how angry you can get yourself, or when remembering or thinking about your moments of anger causes you distress or regret.

Do I have anger management issues?

The short answer is; if your anger has caused any distress or regret in your life or the lives of those close to you, then you might benefit from anger management counselling. Similarly, if any of the following statements resonate with you, you might have difficulty managing your anger.

  • Does anger sometimes control you?
  • Do you sometimes experience uncontrollable fury or rage

Getting help for anger management

Counselling for anger management generally begins by exploring and identifying the embedded cause of your anger as well as triggers that lead to an outburst. Often, the cause of your anger is intertwined with other strongly-felt emotions and our psychologists will work closely with you to get to the root of the problem while at the same time, help you develop positive coping strategies to assist you in regulating and channelling your anger in a healthy way. These strategies generally include meditation, mindfulness, learning new communication skills and in certain cases might include brief cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help change unhealthy thought patterns.
