What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Having OCD can be extremely distressing and stressful not only for those living with the condition but also their families and friends. Having OCD can cause you to experience persistent unwanted thoughts, impulses or images (the obsession part) which are combined with mental or physical (or both) repetitive compulsions (the compulsive part). If you feel this might apply to you and you wish to seek help, just give us a call or book your appointment with one of our psychologists today.

What causes OCD?

Despite considerable research in the area, there is still no definitive identified cause for OCD. Currently, it is largely believed to be caused by the interaction of a combination of neurological, biological, genetic, environmental, behavioural and cognitive factors.

OCD Treatment / Management

Effective treatments for OCD can help to manage and control both obsessions and compulsions, reducing both their severity and occurrence. Your psychologist will work together with you and develop coping strategies which may include both cognitive therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is currently regarded as the most effective approach to OCD. With the right strategies and knowledge, many sufferers of OCD find that they are able to restore normal function in their lives and manage their symptoms effectively. Do note that in certain cases, medication might be beneficial while undergoing therapy. Your psychologist will discuss this with you in your sessions.

If you would like to learn more about how we can help with OCD, or have any other questions, our Perth based Psychologists are ready to help.
