What is Burnout?
A little stress is generally good for us and keeps us motivated and focused. However, being exposed to emotionally and mentally demanding situations repeatedly over time could causes this stress to accumulate and start to have a profound negative impact on our lives and daily functioning. This state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion is referred to as “burnout”.
What causes Burnout?
Burnout (sometimes referred to as “overwork”) can be caused by a number of different factors, most notably the constant enduring of situational stressors and pressures which could also include unrealistically high expectations placed upon you by yourself or others. Burnout is sometimes mistaken for normal, everyday stress that people assume might pass until it is too late and they find themselves in a state of mental collapse. It is important to note that burnout is developed over a relatively long period of time and has many mental and physical warning signs. Learning to recognise and act on these signs early on is a great way to prevent or minimise burnout.
How Therapy for Burnout Works
Our approach for dealing with burnout typically involves both counselling and skills training to help you deal with both immediate symptoms as well as long term management and improved coping. You will work with your psychologist to identify and build on your individual coping mechanisms as well as reduce any negative strategies (e.g. drinking, drug use). Additionally, skills training may be used to help you develop new techniques for managing stress such as mindfulness and meditation.
Online Stress Test
You can take the Kessler psychological distress scale (K10) test online to help you examine your likelihood of experiencing problem anxiety. If you have visited a GP to get a mental health care plan and referral to a psychologist in the past, you might have been administered the same test. Visit the site using the button below to learn more and take the anxiety test. Do make sure you read all instructions carefully. Please also remember that no simple online test can diagnose burnout, this is just to give you an idea of your own personal situation.
